Supernatural (S01E03) - Dead in the Water

First Aired: September 27th, 2005

Looks like watching this show is going to be a game of "hey, that's [insert actor/actress from fave show/movie here]!" With this episode, it's Amy Acker, who plays Andrea Barr. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The Winchester brothers find themselves in Lake Manitoc, Winsconsin to look into a series of unexplained drownings, in which the bodies were never found. They talk to the most recent victim's brother, who told them she was pulled under, but he couldn't see by what. The local sheriff told them that the drownings were likely accidental, and they didn't have any predators in the water large enough to pull anyone under. Their conversation was interupted as his daughter, Andrea (Amy Acker!) walked in, and Dean got her to walk them to the nearest motel.

Looking into the previous drownings, they discover that Andrea's husband had been one of the victims, and her son Lucas, a selective mute, was an eyewitness. Dean tried to reach out to him, resulting in him giving Dean a drawing of a house. Meanwhile, Will, the brother of the last victim, was attacked in his house, and drowned in the kitchen sink. Sam and Dean went to talk to the father, but he wasn't much help. As they walk away, though, they find something interesting - a house that looked exactly like the one in the picture Lucas drew.

Thinking that Lucas might have tapped into whatever it was that was drowning all the people, they went to him again, asking for help. He gave Dean a second drawing, bringing them to a house - but the boy depicted in the picture, Peter Sweeney, had disappeared years ago, when he never returned home from school. Dean found a link between Peter Sweeney and Bill Carlton, the father of two of the drowning victims - they used to be friends, as children. Sam and Dean came up with the theory that Bill might have killed Peter, and the ghost wanted revenge. They went to talk to Bill, but the man had figured out the same thing, and went out into the lake to offer himself up to the ghost, resulting in his boat being capsized and him drowning.

The sheriff didn't believe in anything supernatural causing Will's death, and threatens to have the Winchester brothers arrested if they didn't leave town. They were about to turn into the interstate when Dean decided to turn back and check on Lucas.

At the Barr's, Lucas was up at night, drawing, agitated. Andrea drew herself up a bath, where she was attacked, the lake water coming up through the sinks. Sam and Dean reached there just in time to save her. When asked what happened, she said that before the attempted drowning, she heard a voice saying, "come play with me."

They found a second connection with Peter Sweeney - apparently Jake, Andrea's father, had been in boy scouts with Will and Peter. At this point, Lucas suddenly left the house, and walked towards a place in the woods where he just stopped. His mother took him back to the house, while Sam and Dean dug up the earth where Lucas stopped. They found the bicycle that belonged to Peter Sweeney, but the sheriff also found them at the same moment. They told Jake what they've discovered - that Jake and Will must have drowned Peter in the lake, and that Peter's ghost wanted vengeance. They tried to find out where Peter's body was buried so that they could lay the ghost to rest, but Jake wouldn't believe them. Andrea got him to admit to accidentally killing Peter, but he said that the body sank into the lake. Dean concluded that they needed to get as far away from the lake as possible, which was when they realised that Lucas was right at the waterfront, reaching out for one of his toy soldiers in the water.

Lucas was pulled into the water. Sam and Dean dove in after him, telling a panicked Andrea to remain on the dock. Jake waded into the water, asking Peter to spare Lucas, and take him instead. As he was pulled under, Dean resurfaced with Lucas. The episode ended with them saying goodbye to Andrea and Lucas, and Dean telling Lucas to take care of Andrea and to remember that Zeppelin rules.
